What are Shellac Nails?

What are 'Gel' nails?

Gel nails are the latest and greatest in nail enhancement technology. In short, they're much safer for you, and for us! If health is your focus, gel nails are the way to go!

Why are gel nails so much better than acrylic nails?

Because Gel nails are applied in a gelatinous form, there are no harmful chemicals resulting from the application process. Gel nail application is also less invasive to the structure of your nails too. Since gel nail application does not allow the delicate keratin fibers that are usually exposed to the environment during an acrylic nail application, there is a substantially lower likelihood of bacterial infection.

Older acrylic nails are harmful?

Yes, they are. In fact, five U.S. states have already banned the use of acrylic nails in spas. When applying an acrylic nail, the nail bed has to be buffed to open the cuticles and allow the acrylic nail to bond. It is at this point where your health is most at risk. There are two types of acrylic in circulation in the nail enhancement industry: Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA) and Methyl Methacrylate (MMA). EMA is safe, but MMA is toxic, and was never approved by the FDA. In fact, Methyl Methacrylate is considered a deadly substance, and certainly should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to ascertain what ingredients are in acrylic nail solutions, and most nail enhancement technicians have no clue what their products contain, which is why we always endorse gel nails as a safe and natural alternative.

Why can I still find nail salons that sell acrylic nails?

Unfortunately, in Ontario the nail enhancement industry is not regulated like certain states in the U.S. The salon you may be using now may be good at their job, but if they still sell acrylic nails, it could mean they may not be as well informed or educated in nail anatomy as you may think. At Orange Swan, your health comes first!
